jury duty

After our judge gives us a pep talk about how he knows nobody wants to be here, but Mayor Villaraigosa has been here, (that was as peppy as he could muster, I guess) a younger Asian guy cruises over to my table.  He is wearing headphones, but the music is turned so loud that he may as well just be carrying a radio.  Everyone within a 3 ft radius can hear his music, which happens to be some pretty intense techno. He looks deeply distressed--keeps putting his head in his hands, rubbing his eyebrows, and changing the song, obviously clueless to the fact that he’s DJing for the entire southwest corner of prospective jurors.

It’s weird, actually--it's a rather voyeuristic feeling listening to someone’s ipod mix. Finally, I lean over and ask him to turn his music down. I do it partially because I’m annoyed, but partially just because it doesn’t seem ethical for us to keep listening when he’s unaware we can hear.  What if, in his obvious distress, he needed to listen to Celine Dion or something?

  1. Did you also tell him that he's a living stereotype? Is it wrong that I can only picture him wearing an oversized yellow ski jacket?
